Summer Sharing: Army of Mums, championing women in the workforce

Steadfast Collective loves to champion communities online, and so do many of our clients.

This week, in the final instalment of our Summer Sharing, we wanted to introduce you to one of our new clients for 2021; Army of Mums.

Sister company of Army of Nannies, Army of Mums is a business created around championing flexible, freelance opportunities for working mums. Steadfast Collective is working with Army of Mums to develop a new project-matching platform, linking qualified mums with business projects in their sector.

In this post, we’ve drawn insight from Army of Mums co-founder Helly, looking at what life looks like for working mums post-Covid and how the platform aims to help both mums and businesses going forwards…

Why do we need Army of Mums?

Long before the Covid-19 pandemic hit, many working mums were already struggling to juggle expensive childcare and long working hours. Then the pandemic hit leading to school and nursery closures. The demands of homeschooling in isolation whilst trying to work has, for many, become incompatible with holding down a full-time job.

For many mums, the return to work has always meant choosing between expensive childcare (eating up a large amount of salary) or staying home to raise children, missing out on career progression opportunities or falling behind in your sector.

There has been some great progress in terms of shared parental leave, job sharing and part-time opportunities, but we know that further work needs to be done to provide the flexibility working parents need.

Army of Mums – how it works

Army of Mums believes there are hundreds of projects and one-off tasks that mums can complete from home, on a freelance basis, in a way that works around their family life.

It’s a win for mums and a win for the hundreds of businesses who could gain access to a huge wealth of talent that may otherwise be inaccessible to them.

While further reforms around childcare and maternity rights are needed, Army of Mums provides a valuable stepping stone towards building solutions that fit around the busy lives of mums everywhere.

Their new project-matching platform will take the stress out of job hunting, showcasing a wide range of project briefs across a wealth of sectors.

What’s the road map for Army of Mums?

Steadfast Collective is working with the Army of Mums team to develop and launch their full project-matching platform later in the autumn.

In the meantime, find out more about the work of Army of Mums over on their interim website or get in touch with Helly.
